Cypress Point’s back nine is Alister MacKenzie’s masterpiece, but hole 16 almost didn’t happen — the carry over the Pacific seemed too far, too risky, for a hole to ever work. Legend has it Marion Hollins, the great amateur champion who helped will Cypress Point into being, settled the argument the only way she could: she stepped up and drove the green. Twice. The hole stayed.
I painted this view from a walk I took over five years ago — River strapped to my chest as a baby, while Taylor played a caddy appreciation round on one of the most exclusive courses in the world. The cliffs, the white sand carved into green, the Pacific folding into the rocks below — it’s the kind of view that makes you understand why someone would risk everything to prove a hole belonged there.
Finished in time for the 2025 Walker Cup, The Architect’s Dream is a tribute to the boldness behind one of golf’s most iconic stretches of coastline — and to a quiet family memory tucked inside it.
